30.07 - 31.07
Graphic art, instructor Kaisa Puustak
The course will introduce two classical graphic art techniques – drypoint and carborundum. In case of drypoint technique, sharp hard needle is used for making grooves in a plate, which will be filled with paint. After printing, lines of varying thickness will remain. Evald Okas has used drypoint technique in many of his graphic prints. We will study his creation, trying to understand the methods. The participants will get a plate and engrave their picture on it. The objective is to complete a small print or ex libris. One plate can be used to make several different prints.
The second technique introduced in the course is carborundum. This is a surface painting technique. An image is painted on a plate with a mixture of PVA glue and hard grit, e.g. sand, which must dry for at least a day or two before printing. This technique enables to make various bright coloured prints and has been very popular during the courses. The first day is for preparation of plates, the second for printing. The dried prints wil be signed and taken home by the participants. The basic tools are available, plastic apron should be brought along. Participants may bring also their own intaglio paper.
